Information for Canadian Drivers

If you were visiting New York State and received a traffic ticket you should strongly consider hiring an attorney in New York State. The reason for this is that New York has a compact with both Québec and Ontario. Therefore, the New York DMV will report any moving violations to Québec and Ontario. Most tickets will result in demerit points being assessed. Drivers convicted of a driving related offense in the State of New York, will have home jurisdictional penalties such as demerit points and/or suspensions applied to their Canadian driving record as if the offense occurred in Canada.

We are located in Upstate New York. That is important because we know and have communicated with the District Attorney and Judges in each county here in upstate New York. We have represented thousands of people and are contacted each year by hundreds of Canadian drivers. We know and are quite familiar with your demerit systems and their insurance consequences.

You can be assured that we will handle your case so as to eliminate or minimize the consequences of any ticket you receive here. In almost every case, we can do this.

We have provided some information regarding the demerit points associated with traffic violations commited in New York State. Please click on the appropriate province for detailed descriptions.
